PALS – Overseas Visitors |
|
Overseas Visitors – Hospital Charging Regulations The National Health Service is first and foremost for the benefit of people who live in the United Kingdom. There have long been arrangements in place to allow the NHS to charge people who do not live here for NHS Hospital treatment. Over time, however, those arrangements and the regulations which govern them, have become less effective as patterns of employment and migration have changed. The regulations from the Department of Health seek to close the existing loopholes that have allowed overseas visitors to receive free NHS hospital treatment when they are not entitled. |

All overseas patients are referred to the PALS team, who will then assess an individual’s eligibility for NHS care and treatment. All patients will fall into one of the following categories. Exempt – the individual will be exempt from all charges Reciprocal – the individual is visiting from a country where we have a reciprocal agreement with regards to healthcare Chargeable – the individual will be charged for all their NHS care and treatment (except in the Emergency Department) |

The regulations are very complex and if you would like to know more, please contact the PALS team. If you are a member of staff, all the forms you need are available on the document management system on the hospital intranet or via the PALS office. If you are a patient or member of the public and would like to know if you are entitled to NHS care and treatment, contact the PALS office for more information. |
