Maternity Unit - Ante-Natal Assessment & Maternity Ultrasound

The Day Assessment Unit is located within the Women’s Health Outpatients on level two of the Great Western Hospital. The D.A.U. has been established to enable comprehensive monitoring of pregnant women and their unborn babies and to provide care to medium-high risk pregnancies. The aim is to minimize unnecessary antenatal admissions while providing a high quality co-ordinated service with continuity of care, especially for those pregnancies with complications. This service results in a more efficient use of resources and improves various aspects of antenatal care provided at Great Western maternity unit.

Philosophy. The Antenatal Assessment Unit aims to provide a quality service to women in the Swindon and surrounding area who develop problems during their pregnancy.

  • In diagnosing problems early and providing an appropriate and individual plan of care that allows the mother and her partner to assist in making informed choice about their pregnancy, we are able to ensure the best possible outcome for the mother and her unborn baby.
  • In seeing women on an outpatient basis, we are able to allow women to stay at home with their families for as long as their condition safely permits.
  • The trust is committed to the staff by providing an environment to facilitate care. In addition, there is access to educational and training courses to ensure staff are supported and able to provide a high standard of care.
