Aldbourne Elective Orthopaedic Ward

Aldbourne Ward is on the third floor of the Brunel Treatment Centre and is an elective orthopaedic ward. Here, we care for patients who are having planned surgery on bones and joints. All the staff are committed to delivering a high standard of care and providing a supportive, safe and friendly environment.

On this ward we operate a system of team nursing which means that a group of nurses will be responsible for your care during your stay. At each changeover of staff, the nurse in charge of your team should introduce themselves to you. Please ask if they do not. The names of the nurses working in your team are also displayed on a board opposite the nurses' station.

Telephone Numbers

It is much easier if your relatives contact the team of nurses who are looking after you:
- Blue Team (beds 1-18) 01793 646334
- Red Team (beds 19-36) 01793 646332
If you have subscribed to ‘Patient Line’, your family and friends can also contact you on your own personal number.

Visiting Times

Visiting times are between 2pm and 8pm but we try to be as flexible as possible. If your family and friends need to visit outside of these hours please ask a member of staff. At certain times (following surgery or when procedures need to be carried out) it may be necessary for the staff to ask visitors to leave. Please ask your visitors not to all come at once and to limit the number, especially children, at any one time.

Working in Partnership

It is important for you to work together with the staff members to ensure your recovery goes well. The staff on this ward will try hard to care for your needs and assist you as much as possible. However, there are times when the ward is very busy and staff may be caring for patients with complex needs. At these times we may need to ask you to wait for non-urgent assistance. If at any time you feel that your needs are not being met, please speak to a member of staff. We would like to try to resolve any issues or concerns prior to your discharge.

Technology

Each bed space is supplied with a nurse call bell, light and a Patient Line television and telephone. Please familiarise yourself with these items. If you are unsure please ask a member of staff who will be happy to show you how to use them. A member of the Patient Line staff will visit the ward each day.

Patient Information

We aim to provide you with as much information as possible so that you feel involved and informed about your care. The staff will explain routines and procedures to you. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask, no matter how trivial they may seem.

Patient Leaflets

To assist our information giving, we have a variety of leaflets available. If you have not already been given a leaflet, please ask a member of staff if there are any leaflets relevant to your condition.

Enjoy your Stay!

We hope that you will enjoy your stay with us. Please let us know if you have any problems or concerns before you leave. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Ensuring your Safety

In the event of an emergency such as a suspected fire you will be given instructions by a nurse of any action that you need to take.

Fire Bells

Fire bell testing takes place on a Tuesday morning. There is a health and safety notice board at the ward reception with information about fire evacuation procedures etc.
