The Early Detection and Treatment of Breast Cancer Gives the Best Results

It is important to become 'breast aware' and know what changes to look out for, especially as you get older.

Changes to look for:

Change in shape or size of either breast

Lump or thickness in the breast or armpit

Puckering, thickening or dimpling of the skin

Any changes in the nipple position or the nipple pulling in

Bleeding or discharge from the nipple

Nipple rash or irritation

Persistent unusual pain or discomfort

How to Look for Change

Stand in front of a mirror and look closely at your breasts for any changes. Check both breasts carefully with your arms in different positions. e.g. raised above your head, and hands on your hips with elbows forward.

How to Feel for Change
This can be done in the bath or shower when your hands are soapy, or you can do this lying down, whichever you find most comfortable. Feel the whole of each breast including the nipple and the armpit, with your hands flat and using the pads of your fingers.

Many women have lumpy breasts - it is the change that is important.

What to Do If You Notice Change

Try not to panic. Remember that most changes are not caused by a cancer but should always be checked. If you do notice a change, go without delay to see your GP, who will examine your breasts.

Do not feel that you are wasting their time.
