The Great Western Hospital

“We will provide healthcare services that delight patients and satisfy commissioners by meeting or exceeding all local and national standards and providing convenient, local services.”

The Great Western Hospital is a modern hospital providing emergency care, surgery, diagnostics, paediatrics, maternity, out patient and day case services.

The hospital opened in December 2002, replacing the Princess Margaret Hospital in Old Town, Swindon. The GWH is superbly designed and equipped and offers a first class environment for patients, visitors and staff, with over 30% of our beds provided in single rooms with en-suite facilities, helping maintain patients’ privacy and dignity whilst under our care.

With more than 600 beds, the GWH offers a range of services and facilities from a busy Emergency Department, a dynamic radiology department and one of the best maternity units in the country which includes a birthing pool.

Safety is a top priority for us and we pride ourselves in having very tough infection control procedures in place which have helped reduce our rates of MRSA and Clostridium Difficile by 80% in five years.

You can expect to be seen quickly at GWH as our waiting times are low, with the majority of patients waiting no longer than 18 weeks from Referral to Treatment – the majority are seen much sooner.

The Trust works closely with private sector partners Carillion, who maintain the building and provide important services such as portering, security and catering.  GWH is one of only 40 hospitals in England to be rated as excellent across all three categories of the Patient Environment Action Team inspections (carried out by the National Patient Safety Agency).  This assessment covers areas such as food, cleanliness, infection control and quality of the patient environment.
